Character First!

Basic Implementation Seminar

Why Character First?

The workplace challenges organizations face have common root causes that can be traced to a lack of good character. In this session good character is defined, examples of good character are given, and the benefits of building character are described.

Learning Goal: Participants will be able to apply character solutions to workplace challenges they face in their organization.

Workshop: After answering the question, "What challenges are you facing in your organization today?" participants work in small groups to identify character qualities that, if developed in the lives of employees, would eliminate or greatly reduce a specific workplace challenge.

How to Build Character

Character can be built into an individual's life. A description is given of the difference between character and skills and what is needed to teach and motivate each. Outlined in this session are the steps necessary to establish an organizational culture based on character-an environment that encourages all employees to develop good character and to make decisions and act according to good character.

Learning Goal: Participants will discover the value of helping others reach their full potential by recognizing good character with praise.

Workshop: Each participant will select someone whose character they appreciate. A worksheet is then completed which guides the participant in pointing out words, actions, or attitudes that demonstrate character qualities. Participants then practice praising another individual highlighting the definition of the character quality, giving a specific illustration of how it was demonstrated, and telling the how the demonstration has benefited others.

Employee Meetings

One of the most powerful ways to motivate positive character in employees and coworkers is by publicly recognizing good character with genuine praise. Monthly employee meetings and the value of character recognition certificates are discussed as the forums in which supervisors can publicly recognize employees. Steps of preparation and helpful hints are given.

Learning Goal: Participants will learn how to prepare and present a certificate of recognition in an employee meeting as one means of encouraging the development of good character.

Workshop: Participants select an employee or coworker whose character they value and whom they would like to recognize and encourage. They then complete a Character Recognition Worksheet for the individual and have the opportunity to practice presenting the recognition before the group.

Character Bulletins

Character development must permeate every aspect of our personal lives. Teaching the conduct associated with good character is one facet of character training and development. The monthly Character First! Bulletins are described and how to use the bulletins in Employee Meetings and Character Application Sessions is explained.

Learning Goal: Participants will discover how to use the monthly Character First! Bulletins to teach character in a memorable way.

Workshop: Attendees experience a Character Application Session-a small group discussion of a specific character quality.
